Multi Cultural Manners: New Rules of Etiquette for a Changing Society - Norine Dresser

Very detailed!  Not all that glitters is red-white-and-blue!  So many books out there which dabble on the most common mannerisms and forms of etiquette which are Americanized or considered "European".  With so many cultures it is ignorant to think that a handshake and a nod will get you by.  Kindness will, however - but even that you must be careful with.  Not all cultures are open to kindness from strangers, or are willing to make physical contact such as a handshake.  In fact, it is sometimes considered rude!

Some cultures don't even allow their female members to meet members of the opposite sex outside of their immediate family or even look them another in the eye.  Still others find waving the hand for someone to "come hither" or a wave a "goodbye" very offensive and demeaning.  Even remarking on your admiration for a family heirloom in a person's home can make for an uncomfortable visit. Many Japanese families may consider it their obligation to "give" the item of admiration to you.  Read about the key mannerisms many cultures find taboo or welcome with open arms.

Something as simple as what color an envelope should be when giving a monetary gift or thank you card can severely impact a new relationship.  Know what and how to say it - as well as what NOT to say or do.  In a world of International Corporations, respecting a culture's beliefs is essential.  Sometimes even the most "harmless" compliment, smile or gesture in the wrong cultural scene or at the wrong moment can offend another deeply.

A definite read for the businessperson, college student or those traveling abroad.
