Full, luscious lips have always been sought after, regardless of age.  A plump pout is considered to be a sign of youth and an icon of sensuality.  Many people have searched high and low for the perfect kissable lips, and out of frustration or lack of information settled on collagen injections or other temporary injectables.  Over the years both women and men have utilized all sorts of devices, injectables, over the counter plumping products and manual massage and still the search goes on for the ideal pout.

We search the globe for all of the oldest and the newest procedures and products for obtaining that irresistible look we all dream of.  Our lips thin as we age and today, as medical science has progressed we feel and act much younger than we may look.  We are healthier, more active and aren't about to give in to a "worn out" appearance without a fight.

Although, we know not all individuals may want a bigger set of lips but we do know that no one likes dry, chapped, peeling lips -- no matter what size.  We have included information on products and procedures to plump, augment, pamper and please that perfect pout you long for!

What Is Lip Augmentation?
Lip Augmentation, also called augmentation cheiloplasty, is the surgery or procedure to make the lips look larger, more defined or more youthful.  There are other procedures which can alter the lip's shape such as border definition and lip lifting.

Indications for Lip Enhancement
For persons with small, deflated lips, asymmetry, reconstructive needs, "dropping" or "sagging" upper lip, lack of color, wrinkling from smoking or aging and other complaints.

Am I a Candidate For Lip Augmentation?
Lip Augmentation is the procedure which uses synthetic or biological products or surgical restructuring to enhance the lips in many ways.  Augmentation can be achieved by many procedures, some better than others.  The ideal lip filler would be soft, pliable and permanent and cause NO complications in any patient.  At this time and moment that just isn't possible.  However, doctors try their best with what is available.

What Are My Options In Lip Augmentation?
There are A LOT of options.  Seriously, there are so many that you should read this website in its entirety.  Such options are...

Lip implants:
  • Gore-Tex™
  • Softform™
  • UltraSoft™
  • AlloDerm™
  • Advanta
  • Dermis grafts
  • Tendon Grafts
  • Fascia Grafts
Injectables:
  • Bovine collagen
  • Isolagen
  • Restylane™
  • Hylaform
  • Artecoll™
  • Argiform™
  • and many, many more...

Does Lip Augmentation Hurt?
Short answer: Yes.  But it depends upon the technique and product.  Injectables may hurt FAR LESS than implants.  Having had both Id say Gore-Tex hurt a lot more than collagen or Perlane.  Just don't expect a picnic because it's not -- it's surgery.

What Are The Risks & Complications of Lip Augmentation?
There are not too many risks associated with lip augmentation in comparison to other elective procedures, but there are enough to pay attention and have concern.  It typically depends on the chosen implant or filler.  Let's start with Gore-Tex™... There can be infection and irritation if the ends of the implant are too long for the cavity or not rounded, if needed.  The good thing is that it is reversible and can be readily removed.  UltraSoft is more hollow and has thinner walls than its predecessor, Softform, allowing your own tissues to "grow into" the implant like the others but resulting in a softer feel. If an infection arises, this may make it a little more difficult to remove.  Dermalogen, AlloDerm, and other forms of tissue-grafts or derivatives supposedly are absorbed within your body with no after-effects.  New injectable fillers, that may be approved for the U.S. like Restylane, and Hylaform supposedly have no side effects.  Artecoll is yet another, as is a hopeful Argiform™ hydrophilic polyacrylamide (hydrogel).  Although safety studies must be performed for polacrylamide products due to the residual unpolymerized acrylamide.

Some (ePTFE) (expanded polytetrafluoro-ethylene) implants are hollow allowing your tissues to grow into the implant.  This can make it difficult to remove unless an infection is present.  There may be shifting of either implant or deformity from excess scar tissue arising from an infection or the hands of an unskilled doctor.  Or quite possibly from your body attempting to reject the foreign material.  There may be permanent discolorations from the bruising.  Possible hematomas resulting in additional surgeries and excessive scarring from delayed healing or trauma.

Contraindications Of Lip Augmentation
Persons having been on or having the following may not be  good candidate for lip enhancement.

  • Accutane for six months prior or following.  Accutane may increase your chances of keloid-like scarring.

  • collagen/scarring/connective tissue disorders

  • lupus

  • active diseases may affect outcome or increase risks

  • diabetes may affect outcome or increase risks

  • problems with clotting

  • excessive oral plaque or dental abscesses

  • oral herpes

How Much Does Lip Augmentation Cost?
The costs of lip augmentation or lip remodeling surgery varies significantly between surgeons, medical facilities, and regions of the country.  Patients who need additional or more extensive surgery such as lip lifts, reconstruction or special lip remodeling cases will require more intensive and expensive treatment.  In non-private surgery centers or in-office Operating Rooms the prices may include the following.  However, in hospitals -- surgery charges can usually be separated into five parts:

  1. the surgeon's fee

  2. the anesthesiologist's fee (if applicable)

  3. the hospital charges, which includes nursing care and the operating room

  4. the medications (antibiotics, topicals, dressings)

  5. and any additional charges

All fees are averages; out-patient charges, including surgeon fees, anesthesia, Operating Room charges, and implants if applicable -- unless otherwise noted.  Lab fees, such as preliminary blood work (CBC), are normally an extra $35. - $75., plus medications are usually an additional $120.  If you are to be staying in a hospital or are opting for home healthcare - these expenses are additional.

Financing Your Surgery
Of course, surgeries can be financed.  There are many companies out there who will offer financing for your procedure although not many are plastic-surgery or surgical-specific.  I recommend companies that do have a department which deals in plastic surgery financing as they are more aware of the time you need to recover and seem to have more empathy for the patient and not only their pocket book.  Just be sure to read the fine print in regards to what you receive or what the particulars are before signing with a finance company.

Injectable Products
This usually requires no surgical team, operating room or anesthesia other than local/regional and possibly an oral sedative.  The costs are significantly lower regarding the procedure it self -- although the product may be more expense and cc (cubic centimeters of product) do add up.  inquire beforehand regarding your needs and the going price at that time for the desired product.  Also inquire regarding touch ups for permanent injectables.
