Radiesse Removal From The Lips

I had Radiesse® injected into my lips in 2004, although back then it was known as Radiance FN®.  I had blanching and visible lumping which necessitated removal.  It was partially removed in a quick, in-office procedure under local anesthetic only.  The majority of the build-up of product was isolated to one area of the lower lip, the other was not incredibly visible so my doctor, Gail Humble, M.D. advised it should be left to be metabolized on its own.   I chose to allow the remainder to dissipate naturally as I didn't want to risk too much scarring.

Dr. Humble began by injecting the area with a local anesthetic  for pain relief and epinephrine to hinder bleeding and bruising.  The incision was not within the oral mucosa (inside the mouth) but rather on the 1/3 left side of the bottom lip due to the proximity of the product accumulation.  The product had been injected superficially (not by Dr. Humble) and the blanching and lumping was quite noticeable in this area.  She gently tweezed out the excess product and when the majority of the problematic product was removed, she closed the incisions with very fine suture material.

I still had a bit of blanching and lumping visible for about 9 months in both the lower and upper lip, but it eventually was absorbed.  I was very fortunate not to have any visible scarring or a depression after recovery.

I have since had Restylane and Juvederm injected, but I cannot recommend (nor does the company) that Radiesse be injected into the lips.  There are far too many products which have less complications for this application.
